Blanket Statements are Generally Dumb

The debate over the Employee Free Choice Act is working it’s way through Congress, so of course I hear a lot of really stupid things being said.  One of which is “Unions are bad.”  Regardless of how you feel about unions, this is a stupid thing to say.  It’s the equivalent of me saying “Companies are bad” or “Republicans are bad.”  It’s a blanket statement applied to something that obviously has a lot of variance.  Sure, some unions will be bad, but others will be good.  You’re missing the point if that’s what you really think.  I find this occurs most often in people who see everything as black and white, but the world is actually more of a grey color.

Blanket statments are almost always wrong.  Try not to make your arguments based on this faulty logic.
