To stream or download?

What exactly is the difference between downloading music illegally and streaming it from something like MySpace?

I mean, if I can listen to any song I want, at any time, and all I need is my phone to do it, then there is no need for me to illegally download it, since I’ve pretty much got what I want anyway.  It’s odd that the RIAA would be ok with the streaming scenario  but not the downloading.

Years of declining CD sales and increasing P2P downloads of their product has forced them to give away the music (as they should) and they are just trying to retain that last bit of control by forcing us to stream instead of download.  Given the increase in legitimate video streaming sites, a la Hulu, it would seem this is a lesson that the video content industry is trying to learn from.
